Copyediting is the polish every work needs to be presented in its best light for publication. Whether you’re publishing a book, blog post, brochure, online course, printable, or website, a professional copyedit provides the peace of mind of knowing you’ve made your work as clean as it can be.

 

Unless specifically requested otherwise, I edit following the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) and Dictionary by Merriam-Webster  (online version), and provide feedback with Microsoft Word.

 

The basic pricing for copyediting is listed below, but final quotes will be based on a sample edit of up to 500 words. Sample edits take approximately three business days, after which you'll be sent a file with my suggested edits marked and the final quote. Light Copyedit

Includes a cover letter with an overview of the suggested edits, and the following: 

  • Review for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style consistency as well as suggestions for clarity and conciseness

  • Style sheet that tracks formatting, timelines, people, places, and other terms specific to the individual work—I provide this for both fiction and nonfiction

  • Light fact-checking (if applicable)

  • Follow up information for the author on how to review and incorporate the feedback, if they are unfamiliar 

  • A second pass through the manuscript to look for final errors and ensure suggested changes have been incorporated without new errors

Typical cost: $0.02 (2 cents) per word or $20 per 1,000 words

Heavy Copyedit

For those who are looking for a little more in-depth review of their prose bordering on a line edit (typically applies more for fiction). Includes everything covered in the Light copyedit plus review and suggestions on the following:

  • Point of view

  • Repetition and overwriting

  • Active vs. passive voice

  • Confusing phrasing

  • Telling vs. showing

  • Word/vocabulary usage

  • Smoothing transitions

 

Typical cost: $.025 (2.5 cents) per word or $25 per 1,000 words
